History and Technical Information about Cement Tiles
Patterned cement tiles or encaustic tiles have been around since the mid 19th century and they originate in France. Different manufacturers still use mostly the same classical, ornamental patterns that became popular all over the world. Also more modern patterns were introduced during the 20th century, until the material went out of fashion after the 1960´s. In the 21st century these extremely durable and visually adaptable tiles have become a trend again, with new designs as well as technical innovations being introduced.
What is unique about the cement tiles is that the patterns are not printed, they are a part of the composition of the tile. Colored clays are poured into the moulds and the entire tile is then pressed hydraulically. Compared to ceramic tiles, the cement tiles are thicker and more durable, making them ideal for commercial areas and other areas of heavy use.
You can still find original cement tiles in the Jugend/ArtNouveau style buildings in the cities of Northern Europe. The tiles were historically used for more valuable properties, such as prestigious apartment buildings, hotels, offices, museums and stone villas. However, the uses are being diversified in the 21st century and private homes - whether wooden or stone built - have become a major application area.
The word Moroccan tile is not accurate, because cement tiles are being produced in various countries today and the patterns are originally European. What makes the difference for a consumer today are the technical qualities that vary from one manufacturer to another, and of course the designs and colors they use.
Our cement tiles are made in Turkey and compared to Vietnamese and Moroccan tiles, they have certain technical advantages: The tiles are being pressed in a high pressure electrical hydraulic press, using a mixture of cement and marble. The high pressure method produces tiles with a superior durability.
The color layer in the tiles is twice as thick as in the traditional Moroccan and Vietnamese tiles, which means the tiles tolerate significantly more wear, with colors still intact. Thirdly, the tiles have been pre-crystallized in the factory, which means they are ready to be used after installation. Inquire about the technical details: info@artnuvointeriors.com.
