Industrial symbiosis

We are all aware of the concepts of sustainability, carbon footprint and ecology, but the term industrial symbiosis might be unfamiliar to many. Today I want to write a little bit about how industrial symbiosis actions help us put sustainable ceramic tiles on the market. Industrial symbiosis is the process by which the waste and bi-products of one industry or industrial process become the raw material of another industry. The application of this concept enables a more sustainable use of materials and contributes to the creation of a circular economy. 

The transition to such an economy is necessary for our world where resources are increasingly depleted as it will result in increased economic competitiveness, sustainability, resource efficiency and resource security.

Industrial symbiosis creates an interconnected network that tries to mimic the functioning of ecological systems in which energy and materials are constantly converted without any waste products being produced. It aims to reduce the use of primary raw materials and increase the use of secondary raw materials.

Thus industrial symbiosis,

-Contributes to zero waste generation.

-Reduces the use of natural resources.

-Provides efficient use of natural resources.

-Reduces the needs such as landfill and disposal of wastes.

-Allows value to be created from disposable materials, so the materials remain economically valuable for longer than traditional industrial systems

-Contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

-Serves to reduce the environmental footprint of related industries.

Each producing company in Turkey, as elsewhere in the world, makes their own choices about how they advance the circular economy and do their part in reducing the carbon footprint of their own production. Turkey is following in the footsteps of the EU in starting to implement a variety of ecological actions and certifications. This is highly in the country’s own interest, as much of the production goes to Europe. 

 However, the level of commitment varies from business to business and it is important to search deeply into the production process of any partner we have. Our main ceramic tile producer is working with recycling and secondary raw materials at rates varying between 10% - 100% within the scope of industrial symbiosis. By doing so, it contributes to the efficient use and sustainability of resources in our world where natural resources are rapidly depleted. For this purpose, ceramics containing secondary raw materials are produced by undertaking the reprocessing costs.
