Encaustic cement tiles last a lifetime and are ecological

Colorful, patterned cement tiles have been around since the 1860's and they have again become a trend all over the world. Who hasn't seen the patchwork layouts or monochrome patterns in trendy cafés and quaint boutique hotels? In recent years a lot of inexpensive imitations have also flooded the market, to satisfy the budget-concious consumers' desire for the exotic. A trained eye can easily see the tell-tale signs of wide grout lines and marks of digital printing on ceramic tiles that are being used as a substitute. Encaustic tile patterns even appear on vinyl flooring and decorative carpets!

I suppose this has to be taken as a form of flattery to the original technique, which produces such beautiful visual effects. However, designers and consumers should be aware of the differences between these imitation materials and the original product. The reasons are the same as when we try to raise awareness of the distinctions between real natural stone products and the trendy imitations that have been gaining popularity in recent years. To us, they are 1) ecological production 2) durability 3) appreciation of real materials.

1) Many people are not aware that encaustic cement tiles are one of the most ecological choices for a flooring material. Why so? Cement tiles are made up of Portland cement, marble powder, water, sand and natural pigments, which are layered in a mould and pressed with high pressure in an electric hydraulic press. There is no need for firing in high temperatures or applying glazing, which use energy and contain other chemicals. The material does not contain toxic substances, meaning that at the end of the tiles' lifespan, they can be easily recycled.

2) The biggest ecological as well as economical advantage of cement tiles comes simply from its' impressive durability. The fact is that the most beautiful and best preserved original floors in old buildings tend to be made of natural stone (granite, marble etc) or cement. We have been involved in restoration projects where 100 years old original encaustic tiles have been replaced with new ones in heavily trafficked areas such as apartment building entrances. And we have been able to match the original patterns and colors! Encaustic cement tiles can be sanded and repolished sereval times during their life cycle. Cement tile floors can be considered an integral part of the architecture of a building, the same way as its' outer walls.

3) Spaces that have been built using safe, non-toxic, hypoallergenic materials ensure good breathing air. Natural materials, beautiful colors and patterns produced by artisan skill, all create an elevating atmosphere for living and working. The western consumerism culture needs to be tranformed into deeper appreciation of natural materials and timeless esthetics. Using encaustic tiles creates a solid basis for the entire interior and increases the property's value.

We believe that in the future, we'll see many technical innovations that will enable us to build and live in a more sustainable way. But at the same time, we will hopefully "go back in time" to previous centuries' design ideology that in history has created lasting beauty and value, instead of accelerating disposable culture.
